Exodus 3 Discussion

By Derrick | May 7, 2008

Chapter 3 is the text for the next two Sundays (5/11 and 5/18). This post is a discussion of one simple question (read Exodus 3 first):

What questions or comments do you have about this chapter?

Just a couple of questions…is Moses’ father-in-law, the Midianite priest, a pagan? Also, are there other places in Scripture that we see God saying to remove shoes b/c of holy ground?

I find it very interesting that Moses asks what he has to offer and why God would send him to Egypt. I love the response God gives. God will be with Moses. The fact that Moses has been chosen has nothing to do with Moses’ worth or skill but instead with what God will be doing.

With that said its also interesting how highly esteemed Moses is. I saw a staff once encased in glass in Turkey. The sign read “The Staff of Moses” or something to that effect. They had a big deal in their midst. Knowing what a great leader Moses is esteemed to be makes a passage like this very humbling and thought provoking.

Okay, one more question. Why do you think Moses thought the Israelites would ask “What is His name?” Was it supposed to be like a secret code or password?

I tried to answer this question Sunday, so maybe it has already been answered to your satisfaction. I think it has to do with an issue of identity - God identifying himself and distinguishing himself from pagan gods, identifying himself as the God who particularly relates to Israel as His people and them being able to identify Him as their God. Other gods at that time had names, who was their god?

I am going to ask a “guest blogger” to address this in more detail in case my sermon didn’t fully answer your question.
