Truth and Spirituality

By Derrick | May 15, 2008

Last night’s community group discussion revolved around two related issues - truth and spirituality.  We first viewed this video regarding Oprah Winfrey’s web seminar class (what some have called a “church”).  Our discussion led us to understand that among the many flaws of Eckhart Tolle (Oprah’s guest and teacher of the seminar) and Oprah were the foundational issues of truth and spirituality.

From that discussion we moved on to a discussion of a contrasting model of biblical spirituality portrayed in Total Church, by Steve Timmis and Tim Chester.  It is contrasting because it is rooted in the gospel word and mission, and because it is concerned with the context of Christian community rather than an individual experience.  As I said I would last night, I am here providing an overview of the entire chapter to help provide some context.  Here are the pertinent excerpts from the book and more questions to discuss…

Burning Questions

By Derrick | May 13, 2008

Starting next week in our community group we will discuss the most burning questions you have.  But in order to do that, I need to know what your burning questions are.  It could be a question about a specific doctrine or text of Scripture, or a hot-button ethical issue, or why we do things a certain way or don’t do them a certain way.  It could be an apologetic question or wanting to compare Christianity to another worldview.  It could be about how to respond to or counsel someone in a particular situation.  You are limited only by your own thirst for truth.  So here’s how it will work…From now until Sunday night, you can submit a question as a comment to this post.  But you also need to vote for other people’s questions that you want to talk about.  For those of you who read this blog who don’t come to our community group, you’re free to post questions as well.

Serving People in a Pluralistic World

By Derrick | May 12, 2008

This entry is intended to generate discussion of the following question, inspired by our recent viewing of Invisible Children: In a pluralistic world, where much philanthropy is undertaken by non-Christians, whom do we partner with to serve the poor and oppressed, and how do we make those decisions?  Or, another way to put the question, what do we do when non-Christians are leading the way in serving others?

Invisible Children

By Derrick | May 7, 2008

Invisible Children is the movie we watched in our community group tonight.  It is a documentary dealing with the issue of children in Uganda being abducted into a barbaric rebel army and the plight of those who seek to avoid capture and those who escape.

If you saw this movie with us, what did you think of it?  What impacted you the most?

Whether you saw this movie or not, what is the proper Christian response to suffering and injustice generally, and what are some specific ways you or we can serve the children of Uganda?

Myanmar

By Derrick | May 6, 2008

Regarding the cyclone in Myanmar, the death toll keeps rising.  This is from the Associated Press:

A news broadcast on government-run radio said Tuesday that 22,464 people have now been confirmed dead and thousands more are missing.

Yes, this is the same Myanmar that was in the news a few short months ago for this…

5/4 Sermon Open Thread - Exodus 1:1-2:25

By Derrick | May 4, 2008

This is the place for comments and questions related to Sunday’s sermon. The text was Exodus 1:1-2:25.  Click here (Exodus 1:1-2:25) if you would like a rough outline of the main two points relating to God and Moses (it does not have the introduction or application, and is a little cryptic but if you heard the sermon you can probably figure it out).  The outline covers every section of the text, but it does gloss over the section where Moses helps the Midianite women, and I find this is an interesting section given Moses’ previous failed attempt to help the Israelites and his future role as God’s agent to lead them out of Egypt.  However, I’m ultimately unsure what the ultimate point of that episode is, besides moving the story along so we know how Moses got hooked up with a wife in Midian.  Any suggestions about that episode are welcome.
